Our curriculum is divided into three primary components: Core 1 (required for the Certificate in Bible), Core 2 (required for the Diploma in Biblical Studies), and Core 3 (required for the Master of Arts in Religion degree).

Core 1 - Certificate in Bible

At CUGN we do not make assumptions about the level of your biblical and theological knowledge as you enter your study program. Core 1 leads you on a media-rich journey through the Bible, beginning with the basics of Bible study, an overview of the Old and New Testaments, then through in-depth courses on books of the Bible, ending with a short course in the theory and methodology of interpreting the scripture (hermeneutics). This is the self-study portion of the curriculum that allows you to study at your own pace, but with the goal of completing Core 1 in no more than six months. If you successfully complete the coursework, you receive a Certificate in Bible.

Core 2 - Diploma in Biblical Studies

Core 2 enriches your educational experience as you join an interactive student group going deeper into the study of the Old and New Testaments, while adding studies in theology, church history, and spiritual formation. In small groups you practice teamwork as you study these classical disciplines interactively. In Core 2 the course work is offered in three 8-week semesters, and if you successfully complete Core 2, you receive a Diploma in Biblical Studies.

Core 3 - Master of Arts in Religion (Guided Research)

Core 3 augments your learning experience still more with a guided research format. Because you are now working on the Master of Arts in Religion (MAR) graduate degree, you will choose a major and work with an experienced CUGN professor as guide and mentor in developing your own course of studies and a major research project applying your learning to ministry. CUGN offers six major areas in the MAR program: Old Testament, New Testament, Christian Theology, Church History, Missions/Missiology, and Ministry Leadership. Within the Leadership major you can choose to focus on preaching, men's or women's ministry, spiritual direction, or other areas of interest or need in your work. Over the course of three 8-week semesters you can explore any part of the full range of more than 70 CUGN graduate courses to enrich your research as you and your mentor move your classical learning into practice in ministry. If you successfully complete Core 3, you will receive the Master of Arts in Religion degree.

The Core 1, 2, and 3 programs, culminating in the MAR degree, can be completed in two years. However, our flexible programs allow you to work at a slower pace if that is your desire. See our online catalog for detail descriptions of the Core programs.
